VSNL, the Tata group controlled company is setting up 2000 new base stations and all these stations will be Wi-Max powered for fast internet access. VSNL is investing more than Rs.450 crore over the next two years. These 2000 stations will spread all over the country, mainly in the five major metropolitan cities in the first phase of the project. By the time the project is completed, VSNL will already have Wi-Max base station in over 120 cities across the country.
VSNL is one of the leading bandwidth provider in the country today. The new project is estimated to cover even outskirt city areas with fast internet connectivity. The company has already started it’s first phase installations a couple of month back in Bangalore. With the new Wi-Max facility, it has launched a commercial service there. The company will soon launch its commercial service in Mumbai and Delhi in the coming couple of month.
According to company officials, VSNL will start with fixed wireless internet service. This service is similar to the fixed wireless telephone service provided by telecom companies. The end users will be required to install certain equipments into their premises. The equipment is much like a modem so, it cannot be conveniently used with laptops or other portable devices. With the new Wi-Max coverage, VSNL will be able to bypass state-owned players like the MTNL and BSNL which nearly have monopolised the last mile connectivity through their national wireline networks.
